Raku is a traditional Japanese process which was brought to this country in the 1950s. American potters introduced the post-firing technique that I use. The pot is taken out of the kiln at 1850° and placed in a combustible material – I use straw. The fire changes the nature of the glaze resulting in copper-luster colors or black-crackle effects. Each piece is unique.
