Hand-drawn square plate

$90.00

Hand drawn square plate 8.5″ x 8.5″, Has hanger on the back.

Each piece is hand-drawn using the Sgraffito technique. Sgraffito (Italian: “to scratch”) is a decorating technique produced by applying layers of colored underglazes or slips to leather-hard pottery, then scratching through to create contrasting images and patterns that reveal the clay color underneath.  I use dental tools and choose a finer tool as the details grow smaller. Each piece is one-of-a-kind.

There is a beautiful birch grove above my house in Acadia National Park. It always inspires me artistically. Sometimes when I am creating birches on my pottery, I can see faces in the trees. This led me to create whimsical faces on some, but not on every tree. See if you can find the faces.
